  2.                        NDIS Drivers Installation Notes

  5.  This file contains instructions on installing NDIS drivers for the
  6.  network operating systems listed below.

  15.  Microsoft LAN Manager versions 2.0, 2.1, and 2.2
  16.  ------------------------------------------------

  18.  The EtherDisk diskette contains a subdirectory structure and files that make 
  19.  it an OEM import disk for the LAN Manager installer.  Use the import function 
  20.  of the LAN Manager installer to capture the NDIS driver from the EtherDisk 
  21.  diskette.  Be sure to save the new configuration before exiting the 
  22.  installer.

  24.  
  25.  IBM LAN Server
  26.  --------------
  27.  
  28.  This EtherDisk diskette contains Ethernet driver import files for 
  29.  IBM LAN Server.
  30.  
  31.    IBM LAN Server 3.0
  32.  
  33.    IBM LAN Server 3.0 contains an installer for both OS/2 (LAPS) and DOS 
  34.    (DXMAID).  Both of these installation utilities fully support OEM network 
  35.    adapter driver import capability.
  36.  
  37.    DOS Installation
  38.  
  39.    Run the DXMAID installer from the IBM LAN Support diskette.  Use the 
  40.    defaults from the first menu.  The second menu prompts you to enter the 
  41.    drive and path for the import diskette.  Remove the LAN Support diskette, 
  42.    put the 3Com EtherDisk diskette in the drive, and type A:\NDIS\DOS for the 
  43.    drive and path.  The installer will pause after it copies the files needed 
  44.    from the EtherDisk diskette.  Place the LAN Support diskette back in the 
  45.    drive, and continue the installation.
  46.  
  47.    OS/2 Installation
  48.  
  49.    Run the LAPS installer from the LAN Adapter and Protocol diskette.  From 
  50.    the second menu, select the Install option.  LAPS then installs itself and 
  51.    other files, and returns to the second menu.  Select Install again.  On the
  52.    next menu, LAPS prompts for a drive and path for installation.  Remove the 
  53.    LAPS diskette and insert the EtherDisk diskette in the drive.  Type 
  54.    A:\NDIS\OS2 for the drive and path.  LAPS will copy the needed files from 
  55.    the EtherDisk diskette.  When the acknowledge message appears at the end of
  56.    the copy, reinsert the LAPS diskette and continue with the installation.
  57.  
  58.  IBM LAN Server 2.0
  59.  
  60.  LAN Server 2.0 is not as sophisticated as LAN Server 3.0.  Installation can 
  61.  be done successfully, but manual intervention is required.  In all cases, the 
  62.  user is required to edit files.  For OS/2, the E editor is fine.  For DOS, use
  63.  either EDLIN or EDIT.

  65.    DOS Installation
  66.  
  67.    Run the DXMAID installer version 1.2 from the LAN Support diskette.  Specify 
  68.    the Ethernet adapter installation from the menu.  When DXMAID is completed,
  69.    do the following to complete the installation.
  70.  
  71.    1. Copy the EtherLink II NDIS driver to the hard disk.  Type:
  72.     
  73.       COPY A:\NDIS\DOS\ELNKII.DOS C:\LANMAN
  74.  
  75.    2. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file.
  76.   
  77.       a. Change the line:
  78.       
  79.          device = \LANMAN\PROTMAN.DOS
  80.        
  81.          to
  82.        
  83.          device = \LANMAN\PROTMAN.DOS /I:\LANMAN
  84.   
  85.       b. Change the line:
  86.       
  87.          device = XX.DOS
  88.        
  89.          to
  90.        
  91.          device = \LANMAN\ELNKII.DOS
  92.   
  93.       c. Save the file and exit the editor.
  94.  
  95.    3. Enter the LANMAN subdirectory.  Type:
  96.    
  97.       CD LANMAN
  98.  
  99.    4. Edit the new PROTOCOL.INI file.
  100.   
  101.       a. Four lines after the line [ETHERNET], change the line:
  102.       
  103.          Bindings = IBMAC 
  104.        
  105.          to
  106.        
  107.          Bindings = TCMAC
  108.    
  109.       b. Verify the adapter's hardware settings in the TCMAC section of 
  110.  
  111.          the PROTOCOL.INI file.
  112.  
  113.        
  114.       c. Save the file and exit the editor.
  115.  
  116.    The installation is complete.  The LAN Support program activates the next 
  117.    time the machine boots.
  118.  
  119.    OS/2 Installation
  120.  
  121.     - Insert the IBM OS/2 Requester Diskette #1 and run the LANINST
  122.       installation program.  Select Advanced Installation on the next menu.  
  123.       Select "Install or Configure this Workstation" option.  Follow the
  124.       "Install or Remove a Component" option choices. 
  125.  
  126.     - Follow the "Configure" menu.  Insert the OS/2 Network Adapter Drivers
  127.       diskette when the prompt appears.  After LANINST has completed copying
  128.       the files from the Network Adapter Drivers diskette select the 
  129.       Configure Workstation option from the next menu.  
  130.  
  131.     - The next menu prompts for the drive and path for the additional drivers.
  132.       Insert the EtherDisk diskette and type A:\NDIS\OS2.  LANINST copies the 
  133.       appropriate 3Com adapter files to the hard disk and returns to the 
  134.       options menu.  
  135.     
  136.     - In the Configure Workstation Menu it prompts for adapter and protocol
  137.       options.  In the adapters window, page down until the 3Com EtherLink 
  138.       Family OS/2 menu item appears.  Select this item and continue the 
  139.       installation.  When the installation is complete, exit the installer.

  142.  DEC Pathworks
  143.  -------------
  144.  
  145.  To install DEC Pathworks version 4.1 on a DOS NDIS workstation, DOS must be 
  146.  installed on the target workstation C: drive, or you must have a bootable
  147.  DOS floppy.  Follow these steps:
  148.  
  149.  1. Insert the version 4.1 DOS Client Setup diskette in your floppy drive.
  150.  
  151.  2. Change to that drive and execute the NETSETUP.EXE program.
  152.  
  153.  3. Press [Ctrl]+[F10] twice to change to advanced-operator mode.
  154.  
  155.  4. Follow the screens to select a Transport Protocol.
  156.  
  157.  5. Insert the appropriate diskettes for the selection you made in step 4.
  158.  
  159.  6. Select your network adapter by typing ETHERNET or TOKEN-RING.
  160.  
  161.  7. Select the option (OTHER NDIS) adapters.
  162.  
  163.  8. When prompted for the DRIVE:\PATH\FILENAME for the NDIS driver, type:
  164.  
  165.     A:\NDIS\DOS\ELNKII.DOS
  166.  
  167.  9. When prompted for the full DRIVE:\PATH of the PROTOCOL.INI fragment,
  168.     type:
  169.  
  170.     A:\NDIS\DOS
  171.  
  172.  10. Follow the rest of the installation screens and the procedure for writing
  173.      the KEY DISK.
  174.  
  175.  The NETSETUP program will build the PROTOCOL.INI file for you and modify your
  176.  startup files to use the adapter you have selected.
  177.  
  178.  NOTE:  If you are using a 16-bit adapter in DOS Pathworks, you must add the
  179.         /N parameter to the line in the STARTNET.BAT file that starts the 
  180.         network scheduler.  The line usually looks like:
  181.  
  182.         %BOOT%\DECNET\sch /h
  183.  
  184.  
  185.  Banyan VINES
  186.  ------------
  187.  
  188.  To install VINES 5.0 software on a DOS NDIS workstation, follow these 
  189.  instructions.  DOS must be installed on the target workstation C: drive, or
  190.  you must have a bootable DOS floppy.
  191.  
  192.  1.  Use the DOS MD command to create a subdirectory called \VINES.
  193.  
  194.  2.  Copy the contents of the VINES LAN S/W (DOS) Install diskette into the
  195.      \VINES subdirectory.
  196.  
  197.  3.  Copy the contents of the NDIS subdirectory on the VINES LAN S/W (DOS) 2
  198.      of 2 diskette into the \VINES subdirectory.
  199.  
  200.  4.  Copy the PROTOCOL.INI fragment from the NDIS\DOS subdirectory on the
  201.      EtherDisk diskette to the \VINES subdirectory.
  202.  
  203.  5.  Edit the PROTOCOL.INI file to read as follows:
  204.  
  205.      [PROTOCOL MANAGER]
  206.       DRIVERNAME = PROTMAN$
  207.  
  208.      [VINES_XIF]
  209.       DRIVERNAME = NDISBAN$
  210.       BINDINGS = ELINKII
  211.  
  212.      [ELINKII]
  213.       DRIVERNAME = ELNKII$
  214.          
  215.  6.  Run the PCCONFIG.EXE program located in the \VINES subdirectory.
  216.  
  217.  7.  Select option 1, Network Card Settings.
  218.  
  219.  8.  Select the NDIS Ethernet option.
  220.  
  221.  9.  The NDIS workstation screen appears.  Enter the IRQ that you selected 
  222.      for the EtherLink II adapter.
  223.  
  224.  10. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file and add the following lines, substituting A:
  225.      for C: for a floppy disk installation.
  226.  
  227.      DEVICE = C:\VINES\PROTMAN.DOS /I:C:\VINES
  228.      DEVICE = C:\VINES\ELNKII.DOS
  229.  
  230.  11. Add the BAN command to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  BAN loads the NDISBAN
  231.      drivers and reads the PCCONFIG.DB file to invoke changes made during the
  232.      PCCONFIG stage.

  235.  Other NDIS-based Installations
  236.  ------------------------------
  237.  
  238.  Under this NDIS subdirectory are the directories DOS and OS2.  These 
  239.  directories contain the 3Com adapter NDIS driver and PROTOCOL.INI fragments 
  240.  for DOS and OS/2.  Use these files to install the NDIS driver and create your 
  241.  own PROTOCOL.INI file.
